Recreational Boating

Most people who own a boat use it for recreational purposes only. After all, recreational boating does mean using a boat for having fun. There are so many things with a boat. For example, you can go fishing, take a swim, water ski or tube or you can simply relax and enjoy the water.

Demographics have shown that about 1 in every 6 US households own a boat. That's a lot of people who enjoy recreational boating.  And, consider that even more people take advantage of boat rentals and the opportunities that renting a watercraft presents to those who want to enjoy a day on the water.

Naturally, one of the most important parts of recreational boating is understanding how to do it safely. For many people, an ideal day on the water includes a few 'adult beverages'. Sometimes this becomes more than just a few. It is possible to actually get a BUI (boating while intoxicated) ticket if you don't keep your drinking in check. And, remember that accidents are many more times likely to happen when the operator of a boat is impaired. Passengers also should exercise care consuming alcohol on a boat because they could easily become a man or woman overboard if they aren't careful.

When you are boating you must 'mind the rules of the road' and expect others to be doing the same. Accidents are dramatically reduced when people obey the unwritten and written rules of boating. These rules, at least the written ones, are published by the United States Coast Guard. Basically, you should be considerate of others. This will mean that both you and other people on the water will greatly enjoy their boating excursion. Keep in mind basic rules of courtesy and treat others like you would want to be treated. You’ll be surprised at how many wonderful friends you can make on the lake.
